The Edwardian Ball
The Edwardian Ball, held recently at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. Truly was an enchanting unique experience, a feast for the senses. The elegant, whimsical, event, honored the eccentric author/illustrator Edward Gorey. The mystique of SteamPunk meets the fashion, circus, games, music, dancing, and panache of the turn of the 19th century.
Edwardian Ball founders Rosin Coven & co-hosts Vau de Vire Society brought to life a Gorey story with original music, choreography, narration, aerial acts and circus performances, “The Doubtful Guest.” Guests enjoyed Ballroom Dancing, and performances by Dark Garden Corsetry, “Belle of the Ball” Jill Tracy, MC Vegas, DJ’s Xian, Delachaux, Shakti Bliss, Justin Paul, Lushbunny, Mia Dangerfield, E-Jag, and more. The night included the Museum of Wonders and shopping on The Fonda rooftop.
The Edwardian Ball is produced with the blessing of the Edward Gorey estate and a portion of proceeds go to the Edward Gorey Charitable Trust which is dedicated to animal welfare.
Edwardian Ball, February 23, 2013, Fonda Theater, Hollywood
Stepping into the Edwardian Ball is stepping into a world of color, whimsy, decadence, and beauty--
a world of barons and earls, elegant ladies, clowns, mimes, can-can dancers, courtesans, and British admirals. Men in white tie, tails, and top hat mix with beautiful women in extravagant costumes of lace, ruffles, feathers, and corsets. You see clowns on stilts, processions of gorgeous girls, and even a man in helmet and gas mask from the trenches of World War I. The Ball is a humorous, macabre, goth, steam-punk experience that creates a unique beauty—an eccentric, mesmerizing, and horrible beauty.
Founded 13 years ago by the music ensemble Rosin Coven, the Edwardian Ball is held annually in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Ball is often described as an evocation of the world of writer and illustrator Edward Gorey and his eccentric combination of humor and horror.
The evening starts with ballroom dancing and then proceeds with a series of performances by acrobats, musicians, singers, and dancers, and even includes a stage production of Gorey's short story, "The Doubtful Guest." But mainly the Ball is a place to see and be seen—a place to let fantasy overwhelm you and to appreciate the creativity of the human mind.
